Consoles are built to last, but heat, dust and a tugged HDMI cable cause most of the repairs we see. Here's how to avoid them.

  1. Give it room to breathe. Don't box a console into a tight cabinet or stack things on top. Leave a few inches around the vents.
  2. Dust it regularly. Dust buildup makes consoles run hot and loud. Wipe the vents and keep it off carpet.
  3. Protect the HDMI port. Leave enough slack in the cable so it isn't pulled when someone moves the console or trips over the cord. A tugged cable is the number one cause of broken HDMI ports.
  4. Move it carefully. Unplug every cable before you pick it up or pack it for a trip.
  5. Store controllers properly. Don't toss them in a bin or let them sit on the floor. Dropped controllers and pet hair lead to sticky buttons and drift.
  6. Use a surge protector. Florida storms and power flickers are hard on electronics.
  7. For the Switch, use the official dock or a trusted one. No-name third-party docks have been known to damage the charging system.
